Like everyone has already said – I’ve never heard of anyone giving away free domain names. But, there are builder out there that will let you create your own sub-domain under theirs. Check out Doodlekit:

Servage.net is an international hosting provider, so they have UK hosting as well. They’re very good, use them myself and prefer them to the other big names I’ve used.

As for software, there are hundreds of WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) programs out there so you don’t need a hosting provider that has one. Also, a desktop based one will likely be more powerful and allow you to do more.

However, I wouldn’t recommend using one, even the site-builder ones that come with hosting providers. They create badly coded websites. Better that you learn XHTML and CSS. It’s not actually hard to do, something you can get the basics of in a weekend.

Read “Transcending CSS” by Andy Clarke and it will get you going in the right direction.

Yahoo Geocities will give you webspace and a page builder. The domain will be Yahoos though. Cant say I’ve ever heard of any hosts just ‘giving’ people a domain of their own…
